2.3.4 The Prohibition Against Consuming Animal Carcasses

The instructions to the priests concludes with a final prohibition: “The priests shall not eat anything, whether bird or animal which died of itself or was torn by animals” (v. 31). Its formulation with an object followed by לא and a yiqtol verbal form clearly associates it with the instructions about priestly conduct in vv. 20–27 and distinguishes it from the instructions about priestly perquisites in vv. 29–30a. This is confirmed when we observe that its closest textual parallel is to be found in the Holiness Code’s instructions about priestly conduct (Lev 21:1–22:16):
